Finding your wedding dress is the start of the journey. The real magic happens when the dress begins to feel like it belongs to you.
A wedding dress is not like an everyday dress. It often has layers, lining, boning, lace, a train, a fitted bodice, and sometimes very delicate fabric. That is why bridal alterations are not just about making something smaller, shorter or tighter.
I like to begin by asking the client what does not feel right about the dress.
Sometimes the dress itself is beautiful, but she may not feel comfortable with one part of it. Maybe she does not want to show her arms. Maybe the neckline feels too low. Maybe she wants to add a detail, change the shape, or restyle something so the dress feels closer to her vision.
Then I look at the dress and ask myself how I can help her achieve that goal.
Maybe the bust needs more support. Maybe the waist does not sit in the right place. Maybe the hem is too long, the back does not close comfortably, or the overall shape does not match how she imagined the dress would look on her body.
This is where my background in pattern cutting and draping matters. I look at how the dress is built, how it sits on the body, where the fabric pulls, and what needs to change so the whole garment feels better.
Sometimes the work is a simple adjustment. Sometimes it becomes restyling, such as changing the back, adding support, reshaping the bodice, or adjusting the silhouette so the dress feels more personal.
For me, good bridal alterations are not about forcing the body into the dress. They are about helping the dress work with her body. The aim is to make the gown feel comfortable, balanced and right for the woman wearing it.
