I displayed two very different bridal styles by the window to make the whole showroom feel more like a bridal boutique.
Pre-loved wedding dress alterations are very close to my heart. I have always had a soft spot for pre-loved wedding dresses.
There is something special about a gown that has already had one life and is waiting for the next bride to make it her own. I don’t see a pre-loved wedding dress as just a second-hand gown. I see fabric, structure, quality, possibility, and the woman who may wear it next.
Over the years, I have seen many beautiful pre-loved bridal gowns, from simple A-line dresses to full princess gowns, high-street bridal pieces, British designer dresses and incredible vintage finds. Some have only been worn once and still look almost new. Some are past-season pieces from bridal shops. Some simply need the right care before they can feel special again.
Some pre-loved wedding dresses have details you rarely see in modern bridalwear: soft lace collars, covered buttons, unusual sleeves and delicate fabrics. Vintage gowns may need extra care, but that is part of their beauty. With the right alteration, a dress from another time can still feel special for a new bride today.
But a pre-loved wedding dress was usually made, or previously altered, for someone else’s body. That is why alteration matters.
For the bride shown here, the dress already had a soft and romantic shape, but it needed proper alteration before it could truly feel like hers.
I added extra support through the bust and waist with cups and boning, so the bodice could sit better on her body. I also shortened the length, added a bustle at the back train, and gave the whole dress a full steam to bring back its original volume and softness.
These are the details people may not notice straight away, but they change how the dress feels when she wears it. The gown became more supported, easier to move in, and closer to the shape it was meant to have.
That is what I love about pre-loved bridalwear. The dress already has beauty and history, but the right alteration can give it a second beginning.
