Sometimes a dress is not wrong. It simply needs the right adjustment to work better for the body.
This blue feather strap dress came to me because it was too small for the client. At the first fitting, I gave her two possible options. One option was to let out the side seams. The other was to change the back into a corset back.
Both options could improve the fit, but a corset back would also change the feeling of the dress. It would give more flexibility around the body and add a more polished, couture-inspired finish.
For this restyling project, I removed the original zip and made a new corset back with loops and a matching panel. The aim was not only to make the dress wearable, but to make the new back detail look intentional, as if it belonged to the original design.
The dress was also too long for the client, so it needed to be shortened to the right length. This is one of the most common issues in dress alterations, especially with occasionwear and evening dresses.
The client also wanted the feather straps to look fuller and more dramatic. The original straps had only one line of feather trim, so I added extra feather trim to create more volume. This made the top of the dress look softer, fuller and more balanced.
This is the part of dress alterations I care about most. It is not only about fixing a problem. It is about looking at the whole garment, understanding what the dress needs, and making each change feel considered.
